Topic: Doxycycline Purchase in China - Advice Needed!

Posted by: WandererInAsia

Hey everyone,

I'm currently traveling in China and need to buy some doxycycline. My doctor back home prescribed it for me as a precaution against tick-borne illnesses. Can someone familiar with the situation here help me understand how I can get this medication? I've heard that purchasing antibiotics over-the-counter isn't always straightforward.

Thanks!

Hi WandererInAsia,

It's good to hear you’re being proactive about your health while traveling! In China, antibiotics are generally available only with a prescription from a doctor. Here’s what you should do:

  1. Visit a Local Clinic or Hospital: Look for a reputable hospital or clinic where they can assess your need for the medication.
  2. Bring Your Prescription: If possible, bring a copy of your original prescription and any relevant medical documentation in English. It might be helpful to have it translated into Mandarin as well.
  3. Consultation Fee: Be prepared for a consultation fee since doctors will want to ensure you are indeed needing doxycycline.

If they agree that you need the medication, they should provide you with a local prescription and guide you on how to get your medicine from an authorized pharmacy.

Hope this helps! Safe travels!

Thanks for the detailed response, DocInShanghai. I'll make sure to visit a clinic tomorrow morning and bring along my original prescription. Do you have any recommendations on which hospitals or clinics are more traveler-friendly?

Also, is it common for them to prescribe a generic version of doxycycline instead? Will that be sufficient?

You're welcome! For traveler-friendly clinics in China:

  1. International Clinics: Look for international clinics like the Shanghai United Family Hospital or Beijing United Family Hospital & Clinic. They often have English-speaking staff and can handle prescriptions more efficiently.
  2. Major Hospitals: Large, well-known hospitals usually have good reputations and may have staff who speak some English.

Regarding generics, doxycycline is a generic antibiotic, so you should be fine with whatever form they provide. Ensure that the dosage matches your prescription to avoid any issues. If there’s a language barrier or concern about getting the right medication, it might help to ask them for both the Chinese and English names of the prescribed drug.

Remember to always check the expiration date on the medicine as well.

Good luck!

That's really helpful information! I’ll definitely look into those international clinics. Also, do you think it would be worthwhile bringing some cash just in case? Or are most places accepting credit cards?

Thanks again for all your help, DocInShanghai.

Cash is always a good idea to have on hand, especially if you're visiting smaller clinics or pharmacies where card payments might not be as common. However, major hospitals and international clinics generally accept credit/debit cards.

Make sure you also check with your bank regarding international transactions, just in case there are any fees or restrictions that need to be addressed.

Hope everything goes smoothly for you! If you have more questions along the way, feel free to ask here. Safe travels!
